John Darbonne has been a filmmaker since he first picked up an 8mm camera in high school thirty years ago. Demonstrating that he possessed the necessary skills to be a storyteller on the award-winning FIFTH WARD and iconic music video Wanna Be a Baller. John was tasked with serving as a ghostwriter in addition to cinematography. Since then, his role has often included writing.
On the films that followed, such as KILLING THE BADGE, MARRAKECH, and AUTOMATIC, the role expanded to include serving as the lead editor, illustrating that John understands the narrative flow of features.
John’s career has taken him all over the world. Beginning in the independent film scene in Houston, Texas to the studio system in Los Angeles, John has thirty feature films to his credit, as well hundreds of commercials, music videos, and corporate videos. His roles include writer, producer, director, cinematographer, and editor and his client list includes Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, National Lampoon, Intel, Sketchers, Lincoln Mercury and Hyundai.
Make no mistake about it; John is a filmmaker but lives in the blue space. A dedicated beach bum and surfer first, who has the fortune of teaching a little film class at Texas A&M on an island in South Texas. Most days you can catch him on set, in class, or at the office banging out new material. Unless the waves are up, then you might have to wait a spell, at least until the tide goes out.
